Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, today announced the availability of two new versions of its transient voltage suppressor (TVS) devices in its patented plastic large area device (PLAD) package. The 18-kilowatt (kW) MPLAD18KP and 36-kW MPLAD36KP TVS families meet today's demanding lightning protection requirements in aircraft, including the multi-strike lightning standard (RTCA DO-160E), which have grown in importance as a result of the introduction and growing use of composite body airframes.

60V Synchronous Buck Battery Charger Includes Lead-Acid & Li-Ion Charge Algorithms for up to 20A Charge Current

Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC4013, a highly integrated, high voltage multi-chemistry synchronous step-down battery charger controller. With a wide input voltage range that spans up to 60V, the LTC4013 uses temperature-compensated 3- and 4-stage charge algorithms to efficiently charge 12V and 24V lead-acid batteries. Alternatively, the LTC4013 will charge a multicell Lithium-based battery stack with float voltages near to the input supply. Mode pins define the float voltage and charge algorithm. Charge current is precision regulated to ±5% and programmable with a single resistor up to 20A (depending on the selection of external components). The LTC4013 features user-adjustable maximum power point tracking (MPPT) circuitry that enables simple power optimization in the case of power-limited sources such as solar panels. The MPPT open-circuit method corrects for panel temperature changes without the inconvenience of adding a solar panel temperature sensor. Applications include portable medical instruments, monitoring equipment, battery backup systems, industrial handhelds, industrial lighting, military equipment, ruggedized notebooks/tablet computers, plus remote powered communication and telemetry systems.

D/A Converter Offers More Accuracy in a Smaller Footprint for Diverse Applications Ranging from Radar to Smartphone Testing

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) today introduced the AD9164 D/A converter that brings high-resolution radar images for designers of military and commercial radar while reducing solution component count. Additionally, for designers of precision instrumentation equipment, such as smartphone testers, the new device ensures improved accuracy as well as speed of test, contributing to faster market-ready time while significantly decreasing tester complexity and size. Thanks to its audio to 6 GHz frequency coverage, the AD9164 D/A converter moves the tester market one step closer to a universal wireless test platform.

International Standards Organizations Governing Electronic Products

With thousands of international standards organizations across the world, may aspects of life is subject to standardization, which is a good thing for most people.  Standardizing various processes and systems helps make life safer and even more productive.  The electronics industry, in particular, is subject to thousands of global standards, and hundreds of individual regulatory bodies that create, endorse, and support these standards.

Merits of Hardware Cryptography over Software Cryptography stars

Advantages of Using Silicon Carbide in Power Electronics

The advantages of using SiC in power electronics is the focus of a large number of semiconductor news studies and reports.  These reports prove just how advantages using SiC can be when designing power electronics.

Although silicon offers numerous benefits and advantages in power MOSFETs, it also displays some limitations that are characteristic to silicon material properties.  Properties like low thermal conductivity, low bandgap energy, and limitations in switching frequencies.  Power semiconductor devices, however, that are made with silicon carbide (SiC), don’t possess those types of material limitations.
