Lumileds today revealed its FreshFocus Technology for produce, LEDs to showcase fruit and vegetables in their freshest and most appealing state. FreshFocus Technology is part of the LUXEON Stylist Series, Lumileds transformative line of LEDs designed to provide the perfect lighting environment to sell products in fashion retail stores, fresh food markets and restaurants.

New Cree® MHB-B LED Lowers System Costs for High Performance Lighting Applications

(Nasdaq: CREE) introduces the XLamp® MHB-B LED, a new high-power LED that enables a more effective way to deliver lower system costs for high lumen, high-efficiency applications designed to meet the new DesignLights Consortium® (DLC) 4.0 Premium requirements. Leveraging key elements of Cree’s SC5 Technology™ Platform, the ceramic MHB-B LEDs combine high light output, high efficacy and high reliability to enable high lumen LED designs that are not possible with mid-power LEDs. Create 16x16 LED Displays with Flexible Reference Design

Hobbyists and makers now have more flexibility and options when developing LED signs, using the MAXREFDE99# 16x16 display reference design from Maxim.

LEDs continue to dramatically transform signage and lighting. However, often LED displays today are 8x8 and cannot communicate many international alpha-numeric characters. MAXREFDES99# integrates four MAX7219 LED drivers to provide designers a 16x16 display with 256 LEDs, allowing them to create signs in multiple languages. The MAX7219 driver simplifies the process of controlling multiple LEDs in matrix or numeric display form. For fast prototyping, software code developed for the MAXREFDES99# reference design works with both ARM mbed and Arduino platforms. Developers are encouraged to build upon and enhance the code base for more signage possibilities.

High PF, low THD LED driver ICs set a new standard in efficiency

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Power Integrations (Nasdaq: POWI), the leader in high-efficiency, high-reliability LED driver ICs, today announced its LYTSwitch™-1 single-stage, non-isolated, buck topology LED driver IC family. Featuring a very compact footprint, the IC enables the design of LED bulbs and tubes with high constant-current accuracy while using a minimum number of components. A novel driver algorithm ensures high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) while maintaining very high efficiency.

Shine or illuminate? Developing what the market needs

From smart bulbs in private households to efficient greenhouse lighting to attractively staged architecture, depending on the application soft or signal colours might be needed. The light might need to simply shine, or illuminate something else. So OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has added a new method to its colour LED manufacturing capabilities. Normally, the semiconductor crystals in LEDs generate the colours directly. This gives a narrow spectrum peak (for example, 600 to 630 nanometres for red), which the human eye perceives as a very piercing light. By contrast, the new production method uses only blue semiconductors as a basis. A luminescent material with the desired colour is added in packaging, i.e. assembly. As a result the LED covers a wider spectrum (550 to 700 nanometres for red) and the colour appears softer. With this innovation, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is able to make LEDs with exactly the kind of light its customers need. It also meets all other industry-specific requirements, as a look at the following key applications will demonstrate.
