Renesas Electronics Introduces Low-Power RL78/G11 Microcontrollers to Accelerate Prototyping and Development for Compact Sensor Hub Applications in Industrial, Healthcare and Agricultural Industries

General-Purpose Microcontrollers Equipped in 24-Pin Compact Package Support Up to 13 Sensors

Renesas Electronics America Inc., a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced the RL78/G11 Group of microcontrollers (MCUs), a group of small-package, low-power MCUs that will enable users to easily and more quickly prototype and develop systems that support low-power sensor hubs and sensor application systems. Designed to connect to multiple sensors and convert the sensor output signals to digital data, these compact sensor hubs are used in a wide range of applications, such as computer operating environment monitoring for data center thermocouples in the industrial area, wearable health management devices in the healthcare field, and environmental sensing in greenhouses and factory farms in the agricultural industry.

SIDACtor® Protection Thyristors in DO-214AB Package from Littelfuse Protect Low-Data-Rate Interfaces, Outdoor Data Interfaces

Pxxx0S3NLRP Series provides surface mount solution designed for compliance with global regulatory standards

Littelfuse, Inc., the global leader in circuit protection, the global leader in circuit protection, has introduced a new series of SIDACtor® Protection Thyristors in DO-214AB (surface-mount) packages, designed to protect low-data-rate interfaces and outdoor data interfaces in general industrial applications. The Pxxx0S3NLRP Series provides robust surge protection performance at up to 2.5kA, while maintaining much lower switching threshold (VS) and on-state voltage (VT) than traditional protection solutions like Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) technology. They also offer crowbarring power fault protection superior to typical clamping devices.

60V Synchronous Buck Battery Charger Includes Lead-Acid & Li-Ion Charge Algorithms for up to 20A Charge Current

Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC4013, a highly integrated, high voltage multi-chemistry synchronous step-down battery charger controller. With a wide input voltage range that spans up to 60V, the LTC4013 uses temperature-compensated 3- and 4-stage charge algorithms to efficiently charge 12V and 24V lead-acid batteries. Alternatively, the LTC4013 will charge a multicell Lithium-based battery stack with float voltages near to the input supply. Mode pins define the float voltage and charge algorithm. Charge current is precision regulated to ±5% and programmable with a single resistor up to 20A (depending on the selection of external components). The LTC4013 features user-adjustable maximum power point tracking (MPPT) circuitry that enables simple power optimization in the case of power-limited sources such as solar panels. The MPPT open-circuit method corrects for panel temperature changes without the inconvenience of adding a solar panel temperature sensor. Applications include portable medical instruments, monitoring equipment, battery backup systems, industrial handhelds, industrial lighting, military equipment, ruggedized notebooks/tablet computers, plus remote powered communication and telemetry systems.

Board Mount 15W to 60W AC-DC Power Supplies Have Medical and ITE Certifications

TDK Corporation announces the introduction of the TDK-Lambda KMS-A 15W to 60W board mount AC-DC medical and ITE certified power supplies. Capable of starting up at -40oC, the convection cooled units will operate in ambient temperatures of up to 80oC and are rated for full load over a -30 to 50oC range. The KMS-A series is designed for use in a wide range of medical and industrial applications, including dental, home healthcare and test and measurement.

3 Steps Electrical Engineers Should Take to Obtain the Best Electronic BoM Costs

To stay competitive in today’s extremely tough markets, electrical engineers have to not only be technically adept at designing in components that give their products a competitive edge, but they also have to know the best practices in assuring that the Bill of Material (BoM) costs are as low as possible.  As the electronic component BoM cost usually represents the single largest cost element of an end-product, being good at controlling these costs can give companies in saturated markets a competitive edge.

The field applications engineers at SemiElectronics have come up with the 3 top items that engineers should pay attention to during design process and beyond to leverage the best BoM costs possible.

International Standards Organizations Governing Electronic Products

With thousands of international standards organizations across the world, may aspects of life is subject to standardization, which is a good thing for most people.  Standardizing various processes and systems helps make life safer and even more productive.  The electronics industry, in particular, is subject to thousands of global standards, and hundreds of individual regulatory bodies that create, endorse, and support these standards.

As an electrical engineer working on electronic designs, it’s important to know about some of the international standards organizations that govern electronic products.  Here are some of the well-known organizations that we find engineers work with most frequently:

Xilinx Broadens the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC Family with Streamlined Dual-Core Devices

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced it has added streamlined dual-core members to the Zynq® UltraScale+ MPSoC family of devices. The new dual-core "CG" family members expand the Zynq MPSoC portfolio scalability, to include dual application and real-time processor combinations.
