Maxim’s Industrial IoT Reference Design Speeds Development of Authenticated Data Chains

Highly secure coprocessor supports Arduino® and ARM® mbed™ platforms, assures easy prototyping

Addressing the many issues related to system security in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) installations, the MAXREFDES143# embedded security reference design from Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM) provides protection against counterfeit sensor data, guaranteeing its authenticity and integrity along the entire data chain, from transducer to the cloud.

The rapid growth of IoT capabilities for industrial applications comes with legitimate concerns about data integrity, due to deliberate corruption of critical sensor data anywhere between a source and the cloud. The reference design's sophisticated architecture and components, Arduino-compatible hardware interface, and ARM mbed libraries support simplifies development of secure, uncorrupted, and authenticated sensor-to-web data. It is ideal for analog sensor node and data authentication in factory automation and industrial processing applications.

New 1700V SiC MOSFET and Control IC Evaluation Board from ROHM Semiconductor

ROHM Semiconductor has recently announced the availability of a new 1700V SiC MOSFET optimized for industrial applications, including manufacturing equipment and high-voltage general-purpose inverters.

In recent years, the growing trend to conserve energy in all areas has increased the demand for energy-saving power semiconductors, particularly for applications in the industrial sector such as general-purpose inverters and manufacturing equipment. In the majority of auxiliary power supplies, which are used to provide drive voltages for power supply circuits, control ICs, and various supplementary systems, high breakdown (1000V+) silicon MOSFETs are normally utilized. However, these high-voltage MOSFETs suffer from large conduction loss (often leading to excessive heat generation), and present problems related to mounting area and the number of external components, making it difficult to reduce system size. In response, ROHM developed low-loss SiC MOSFETs and control ICs that maximize performance while contributing to end-product miniaturization.

Create 16x16 LED Displays with Flexible Reference Design

Hobbyists and makers now have more flexibility and options when developing LED signs, using the MAXREFDE99# 16x16 display reference design from Maxim.

LEDs continue to dramatically transform signage and lighting. However, often LED displays today are 8x8 and cannot communicate many international alpha-numeric characters. MAXREFDES99# integrates four MAX7219 LED drivers to provide designers a 16x16 display with 256 LEDs, allowing them to create signs in multiple languages. The MAX7219 driver simplifies the process of controlling multiple LEDs in matrix or numeric display form. For fast prototyping, software code developed for the MAXREFDES99# reference design works with both ARM mbed and Arduino platforms. Developers are encouraged to build upon and enhance the code base for more signage possibilities.

Cypress Enables IoT Developers to Easily Create Tiny, Solar-Powered Sensor Beacons that Wirelessly Transmit Data on their Surrounding Environment

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today introduced a new kit with a complete reference design for a tiny, battery-free sensor beacon for a broad range of fast-growing Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The CYALKIT-E02 Solar-Powered BLE Sensor Beacon Reference Design Kit provides an easy-to-use platform for the development of a solar-powered Wireless Sensor Node (WSN) that can sense the temperature and humidity around its location and transmit the data using Bluetooth®Low Energy connectivity. The reference sensor beacon, which is 25 mm in diameter—the size of a U.S. quarter, can be placed and left to operate without maintenance for battery changes, making it ideal to monitor environmental conditions in smart home, commercial building, factory and agriculture settings. The kit is available now for pre-order for $49.
